The Lowdown
Violin, that most classic of classical instruments first took the shape of the instrument we know today in the 16th century. It is held by resting the violin under the chin, with one hand on the neck of the instrument. This hand holds down the four strings to change their pitch while the other draws the bow across the strings to make a sound. Here’s violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy to show us how it’s done.
The Crowd
Although people normally start as children, violin lessons are great to pick up at any stage of life. With both hands doing different things it can seem difficult at first but after a few violin lessons you’ll get the hang of it. From then on it’s up to you. You may not be the next Niccolò Paganini, but using the ABRSM’s grading system you can track your progress. Violin classes can also be used for a number of different styles including country, folk and even rock.
The Cost
Owning your own violin is a necessity if you are serious about learning the instrument. But with beginner violins starting from as little as £50, you need not break the bank.
