The Lowdown

Poi is probably the second best known Maori dance, after the Haka, and thankfully there’s a lot less shouting and sticking out of tongues. Originating in New Zealand, what makes poi different is the tethered weights that the dancers use to form mesmerising geometric shapes as they move. Confusingly these objects (think two weighted tassels connected by string) are also called poi. The skill with which the dancers can make shapes with a poi in each hand while dancing and singing makes poi an impressive spectacle to watch and great fun to try.

The Crowd

Poi has it all: singing, dancing, its own form of music,  even fire! Sometimes the end of the poi is lit for a spectacular effect. Great fun to learn in a group, it’s a wonderful way to meet new people. And with a couple of poi being your only props, you can practice at home between classes.  One of the most quirky things to do in London, go along and give it a try, it’s a safe bet you’ll be the first of your friends to know how to wield a poi.

The Cost

Our TasterLab tasters will give you a great deal on poi classes but if you want to practice at home it’s best to invest in your own pair of poi. Ask your instructor for advice on what to buy but prices start from around £30.
