The Lowdown

Golf and London are two words you would not normally put together. One requires acres of open space while in the other a bit of the green stuff is about the only thing lacking. But there are a surprising number of places to take golf lessons in London and the capital has its own strong golfing history. Scotland may boast the starring role in the development of the sport but the club at Blackheath is one of the world’s oldest and Britain’s first municipal course was set up at Chingford, one of the first steps in separating golf from its elitist reputation.

In total there are over 100 golf clubs in Greater London, so there is no excuse for Londoners who want to lower their handicaps. A fair number of these are ‘pay and play’ courses meaning you don’t need to join, just turn up, pay and play. Simple. Most also offer lessons from the club professional.

The Crowd

Golf was famously defined by Mark Twain as, “a good walk spoiled,” but he never watched a thrilling Ryder Cup finale, so what does he know? Okay, so he knows quite a lot, but you were wrong on this one, Mark. There are fewer more rewarding and invigorating experiences than a round of golf. But we can’t deny that it can be infuriating, too.

When it comes to golf you really are on your own. In football a striker can blame poor service from the rest of his team-mates, in tennis a player can hold his hands up and say his opponent was just too good. When it comes to golf your only gripes can be against inanimate objects like golf clubs, and we all know what they say about bad workmen. So why not do yourself a favour, swallow some pride and get some golf lessons in London from a professional at your local course?

The Cost

A new set of clubs starts at around £100, but luckily there will be clubs available to use at your TasterLab taster session so you can try something new before committing to a big purchase.

And Finally…

This video features tips on how to swing like pro-golfer Tiger Woods, but you'll probably still need to take a few golf lessons in London.
