The Lowdown
Flutes have been around a long old time. The very first flute was made out of a bear’s leg bone and dates back around 40,000. Safe to say flute-making techniques have come a long way since then, and today’s methods are a little less grizzly. Chances are the flute you’ll be playing these days will be made of metal, although which kind depends on how much you’ve got to spend.
The hard part with the flute is getting a noise out of it to begin with. Unlike other woodwind instruments like the clarinet or oboe, you make a sound by blowing across the opening rather than into it. But after a few flute lessons, you’ll get the hang of it.
The Crowd
Hugely popular in jazz and rock as well as classical music, great as a solo instrument or as part of a group or orchestra, the flute really is a jack of all trades. One of the most diverse orchestral instruments, whether you’re into Mozart, Jethro Tull, or the Beastie Boys, the flute has something to offer if you're looking to try something new.
The Cost
Flutes start at around £100, but you can easily rent one for your TasterLab lesson if you're unsure if you want to commit to learning the instrument.
And Finally…
The flute looks pretty complicated what with all the valvey, knobby bits. Here’s an introduction to all the parts of the flute so you can have a head start before your first flute lessons.
