The Lowdown
Cello classes couldn’t help but impress friends, family and employers alike. There can be fewer classier sounds than the deep hum of a perfectly played cello. Like the violin’s more sophisticated older brother, the cello also has four strings and is played with a bow. Its size means it's best played sitting down. The instrument sits upright on the floor via an endpin and rests between the player’s legs.
The Crowd
Cello classes are ideal for devotees of chamber or classical music, with this regal instrument playing a pivotal role in pieces by the likes of Benjamin Britten and Vivaldi. Even if your ambitions aren’t so grand but you’ve always wanted to try something new in music, cello classes are a great option. Imagine inviting friends along to watch you play in a string quartet. And the cello has done its fair share to shape popular music too, via works by The Beatles and Nick Drake.
The Cost
The cello is by no means an impulse buy. With beginner instruments costing around £700 and a bow at least £40 on top of that, you won’t be expected to turn up to your TasterLab taster with your own instrument. However, cello teachers in London will advise you that instruments can be hired from as little as £17 per month, giving you time to decide whether or not to take the plunge.
And Finally...
If you were still in any doubt as to the value of learning the cello, let James Bond show you that there can be another use for your cello lessons.
