The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Not literally, that would be hideous, but you get the gist of the old saying. Recent research has shown that women also like to eat so if you cook something delicious for your loved one this Valentine’s Day, you’re probably on safe ground. If you haven’t got a special someone, stop moping around, put the Lambrini/Stella back in the fridge and go to our amazing Valentine’s singles event. You’ll learn to cook wonderful food, then eat it, and meet other lovely single people. There aren’t many better things to do in London than that.
Right, that’s the obligatory plug out of the way, now onto the food bit. Want to whip up something sumptuous to impress this February 14 but short on Valentine's Day ideas? We’ve rummaged around the junk-filled loft of the internet so you don’t have to. Here’s our pick of the best Valentine’s Day recipes the web has to offer:
1. The Food Network’s Breakfast Spectacular
Breakfast, the Valentine’s Day pre-emptive strike. Start your culinary assault early by waking your partner up with the irresistible aroma of French toast. Add a delicious fruit salad on the side, and wash it all down with Pomegranate-Ginger Sparklers. They do contain booze so best for those who have the day off or don’t value their reputation at work too much.
2. The Starter - Delish.com’s Mussels South of Two Borders
Nothing says romance like something French and fancy, eating mussels fulfills both of those criteria, although this recipe has a rather more Latino flavour. Cooked with chorizo, chillies and beer, it should kick start the meal nicely.
3. Main Course for Meaties - Jamie Oliver’s Parmesan Chicken Breasts with Crispy Posh Ham
You can’t fail with a recipe from TV’s cuddly chef and culinary crusader, it even says posh in the title. And no sniggering at the back, the chicken breasts in question aren’t physically Jamie’s.
4. Main Course for Veggies - Delia Smith’s Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne with Pine Nuts
If you can’t trust Delia, who can you trust? The nation’s favourite cook (probably) goes all out with this veggie lasagne, cramming not one but four cheeses into the ideal dish for non meat-eaters.
5. Dessert - BBC Good Food’s Red Velvet Cake
The first two courses may earn you brownie points, but it’s the pudding that seals the deal. And with this four-story monument to indulgence, you can hardly go wrong. It’s a thing of beauty just to look at, imagine eating it.
